How to Plan a Trip to Fiji: A Practical 2026 Vacation Guide
Planning Fiji becomes much easier once you choose the region before you choose the resort. Every island change takes time, and a trip that looks simple on a map can quickly turn into a string of ferry, flight and road-transfer days. For most first trips, 7 to 10 days with two bases is a sensible balance. With 3 to 5 days, pick one area. With 12 to 14 days, you can add a more remote stop such as Taveuni or Savusavu without turning the whole holiday into a transfer schedule.

How many days do you actually need in Fiji?
The usual planning mistake is counting nights but ignoring transfer time. A ferry to an outer island, a domestic flight, or a road trip across Viti Levu can take a large part of a day once check-in, waiting and hotel transfers are included. Build the route first, then choose hotels inside that route.

If your priority is simply a beach holiday, there is no prize for visiting more islands. Four nights in one good location can be more useful than two nights each in two locations when every move means packing, checking out and waiting for transport.
Where to stay: choose the region before the resort
Fiji is not one resort strip. Nadi and Denarau are convenient for arrivals and boat connections, the Coral Coast combines mainland beaches with road access, the Mamanucas are easy to reach for an island stay, and the Yasawas feel more remote but take longer to reach. Taveuni and Savusavu make more sense when diving, rainforest or a quieter northern trip is important enough to justify a domestic flight.

When to visit Fiji
Fiji's cool/dry season runs from May to October, while the warm/wet season runs from November to April. Tourism Fiji notes that the main tourist peak overlaps with the drier winter months and school holidays. Fiji Meteorological Service treats November to April as the tropical cyclone season, with peak regional activity normally in the first part of the year.
Do not read "dry season" as "no rain." Rainfall varies between regions and from year to year. Western Viti Levu and the offshore western islands can have very different conditions from Suva or Taveuni on the wetter eastern side. May to October
Usually the easier choice for beach days, hiking and island transport if lower humidity and less rain matter most. Expect stronger demand around school-holiday periods.
November to April
Warmer, more humid and wetter. Trips can still work well, but build more flexibility into boats, flights and outdoor plans because tropical systems and heavy rain can disrupt transport.
Flights, visas and Fiji entry requirements
Nadi International Airport is Fiji's main international gateway. If your first accommodation is in the Yasawas, do not assume you can step off an international flight and immediately continue to the island. The daily Yasawa Flyer leaves Port Denarau in the morning, so many arrival times require a night around Nadi or Denarau first.
Visitor permits
Fiji Immigration says a visitor permit can be issued on arrival to travellers from visa-exempt countries for up to four months. Travellers from non-exempt countries need the appropriate visa before travel. Tourism Fiji's current entry guidance also lists a passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay, a return or onward ticket and a confirmed address in Fiji. Check your nationality against the Fiji Immigration visitor-permit information before buying a non-refundable ticket.
Arrival card, customs and biosecurity
Fiji Revenue and Customs Service requires each traveller to complete a Passenger Arrival Card. Biosecurity risk goods must be declared, including food, plants, seeds, wood, soil, animal products and some used outdoor equipment. FRCS also requires declaration of FJ$10,000 or more in currency or equivalent negotiable instruments. When in doubt, declare the item rather than guessing at the border.
Fiji ferry routes, domestic flights and getting around
Fiji does not have one national tourist ferry network. The right boat depends on the island group. For most visitors, Port Denarau is the key hub for Mamanuca and Yasawa resort transfers. Trips to Vanua Levu, Ovalau, Kadavu and other outer islands use different ports and operators, and those schedules should be checked close to travel rather than copied from an old timetable.

The Bula Pass pricing published for travel from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 is in US dollars, not Fijian dollars: US$256 for 5 days, US$282 for 7 days, US$323 for 10 days and US$387 for 15 days. That currency detail matters when comparing a pass with single transfers.
Domestic flights
Fiji Link serves domestic destinations including Nadi, Suva, Labasa, Savusavu, Taveuni and Kadavu, among other outer islands. Northern Air also serves Nadi, Suva, Labasa, Savusavu, Taveuni and several smaller destinations. Flights are usually the practical choice when a short holiday includes Taveuni or Savusavu.
Recheck baggage before packing for a domestic leg. Fiji Link's current domestic VALUE allowance is one checked piece up to 15kg plus one 7kg cabin piece; other fare types differ. Northern Air publishes a 15kg checked allowance. A bag that is fine on your international ticket can therefore create a problem on a small domestic aircraft.
Buses, taxis and rental cars on Viti Levu
- Buses: Tourism Fiji describes buses as a low-cost option for routes such as Nadi, Lautoka, the Coral Coast, Pacific Harbour and Suva, with longer Viti Levu trips costing up to about FJ$20 one way. The public system uses disposable electronic fare cards.
- Taxis: at Nadi Airport, use a marked taxi, have Fiji dollars available and make sure the meter is on. For non-metered or longer transfers, confirm the fare before leaving.
- Ride-share: Uber, Lyft and Ola do not currently operate in Fiji.
- Rental cars: Tourism Fiji says renters need a valid driver's licence in English or an international licence and a credit card. Fiji drives on the left.
How to build a realistic Fiji budget
A single "Fiji costs FJ$X per day" figure is not very useful. A town hotel on Viti Levu and a private island resort may be in the same country but have completely different transport and meal costs. Price the whole route, not just the nightly room rate.

How to make a Fiji vacation cheaper
If price matters more than staying on a private island, start by comparing Nadi, Wailoaloa and the Coral Coast. You can still book an island day trip without paying island-resort rates every night. If the Yasawas are the reason you are going to Fiji, do the opposite: keep the mainland portion short and spend enough nights in the islands to make the ferry cost and travel time worthwhile.
When comparing resorts, add room + required meal plan + return transfer + taxes/fees. A cheaper room can become the more expensive choice once those extras are included.
Fiji itinerary ideas for 5, 7, 10 and 14 days
These are planning frameworks, not schedules you need to follow exactly. The point is to leave enough time in each place and avoid unnecessary backtracking through Nadi.
5 days: choose one experience
Pick either the Coral Coast, Denarau, or one Mamanuca island. If you want a true island-resort stay, go directly to a Mamanuca property that fits the published boat schedule. If you want more freedom to explore by road, stay on the Coral Coast. Trying to add the Yasawas, Suva and the Coral Coast to a five-day trip usually creates more transfer time than value.
7 days: mainland plus one island base
- Days 1 to 3: Coral Coast for beach time, Sigatoka-area sights and an inland or cultural activity.
- Days 4 to 6: move to one Mamanuca island for snorkeling and a slower resort stay.
- Day 7: return toward Nadi for the international flight, leaving a sensible buffer around the boat schedule.
A Yasawa stay can replace the Mamanuca section, but check the 8:45am departure and the resort stop before fixing the rest of the itinerary.
10 days: a strong first-trip balance
- Night 1: Nadi or Denarau if your arrival does not connect cleanly with the next transfer.
- Days 2 to 5: Coral Coast.
- Days 6 to 9: one Yasawa or Mamanuca island, or two Yasawa stops if island hopping is the main goal.
- Day 10: return for departure. If the international flight is early, use the previous night near Nadi rather than relying on a same-day island transfer.
14 days: add the north only if it earns its place
Two weeks gives you enough room for a third region. A nature or diving trip could combine 3 to 4 nights on the Coral Coast, 4 nights around Taveuni or Savusavu, and 4 to 5 nights in the Mamanucas or Yasawas, with Nadi used only where flight and ferry connections require it. If diving is not a priority, using those extra days for a slower two-region trip can be just as rewarding and much simpler.
What to book first
- Choose the region and trip length. Do this before comparing dozens of resorts.
- Check international flight dates. Note the actual arrival time in Nadi, not just the day.
- Check the critical ferry or domestic flight. For Yasawa trips, make sure your Port Denarau connection works with the 8:45am departure.
- Book accommodation around that transport. Check meal-plan requirements and transfer instructions before paying.
- Add the final Nadi night if needed. It can be worthwhile before an early international departure or after a late island return.
- Then book high-priority activities. Leave some open time instead of scheduling every day.
Practical Fiji travel tips for 2026
SIM cards and internet
Vodafone and Digicel both have outlets in the Nadi Airport Arrivals Hall, and Tourism Fiji says the airport outlets are open from 5:00am to 10:00pm daily. Bring your passport for SIM registration. Digicel's current Traveler 25 plan includes 75GB for FJ$25 with 7-day validity. Vodafone also offers tourist SIM and eSIM options, so compare the current offer against your phone's compatibility and the length of your trip rather than buying an international roaming plan automatically.
Cash and cards
Cards are widely useful at larger hotels, resorts and businesses, but cash still matters. Tourism Fiji specifically advises having Fiji dollars for airport taxis, and smaller businesses or outer-island locations may have limited card or ATM access. Do not plan an outer-island stay around finding an ATM after you arrive.
Health, water and insurance
Travel insurance is strongly recommended, particularly if the trip includes remote islands, diving or activities that may require medical evacuation. Medical facilities are more limited away from the main urban centres. For conservative water advice, Australia's Smartraveller recommends boiled or sealed bottled water and extra caution during and after heavy rain or flooding. Mosquito-borne illnesses including dengue occur in Fiji, so repellent and bite prevention are sensible year-round precautions.
