Specific practices and clear evidence

Words such as sustainable, green and eco-friendly are useful only when readers can understand what they refer to. Our approach is to explain specific practices and identify the source of the information.

When describing an environmental initiative, we look for details that can be checked:

• What the business actually does, such as reducing single-use packaging, managing wastewater or generating some of its electricity from renewable sources.
• Whether a statement comes from the operator, an independent organization or a published assessment.
• For a certification, the issuing body, the property or activity covered and whether the certification is current.
• For an impact figure, the original source, measurement period and what was measured.

An operator-reported initiative should be described as such. When evidence is limited, the wording should reflect that limit. One positive practice is not enough to support a claim about the environmental impact of an entire resort or tour.

Respect for local people and culture

Responsible travel starts with the people who live in a destination. We aim to make locally owned businesses and community-hosted experiences easier to find, using confirmed ownership and hosting information where available.

For village visits, cultural activities and community projects, useful guidance should explain who hosts the visit, how to arrange permission and what fees or contributions apply. Local hosts should guide the experience and explain their own customs.

• Ask permission before photographing people or entering private and sacred spaces.
• Follow the host’s guidance on clothing, ceremonies and areas open to visitors.
• Pay agreed fees and support local makers without assuming every souvenir is locally made.

Care around reefs and wildlife

Our guidance should help travelers enjoy Fiji’s natural places with care. We favor experiences that explain local access rules, visitor behavior and the needs of the habitat or animals involved.

• Observe wildlife at a respectful distance and avoid chasing, handling or feeding animals for an encounter or photograph.
• Keep off coral, avoid touching marine life and follow local guide and marine-area rules.
• Check who runs a conservation activity, what visitors actually do and how the work is supervised.

A conservation label alone is not enough to establish that an activity benefits wildlife or a reef. The purpose, methods and visitor role should be clear.

Practical choices for your trip

Useful advice has to work with real transport connections, local services and each traveler’s needs. Our guides aim to explain the available options and their trade-offs so that responsible choices are practical.

• Plan enough time in each place and consider whether an extra transfer adds enough value to the trip.
• Compare public transport and shared transfers where they suit the route, timing, luggage and accessibility needs.
• Carry reusable items where practical, use designated drinking-water refill sources and follow local waste-disposal arrangements.

Safety and reliable access remain part of the decision. Environmental comparisons need evidence, including the route and assumptions behind any emissions figure.
