Beqa Lagoon Shark Diving: A Practical Fiji Guide

Beqa Lagoon shark diving usually starts with a morning boat trip from Pacific Harbour on Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu. You can book with a mainland operator without staying on Beqa Island. These are fed shark dives, with guests watching from assigned positions while the crew manages the encounter. Choose the site, depth and operator before arranging your hotel and road transfers.

Where is Beqa Lagoon, and where do the dives leave from?

Beqa Lagoon lies off the southern coast of Viti Levu, around Beqa Island. Pacific Harbour is the practical mainland base for several shark-dive operators. It has road access along Queens Road, so reaching the dive center from Nadi, the Coral Coast or Suva does not require a domestic flight.

The lagoon has several separate shark-dive sites. Beqa Adventure Divers visits Shark Reef Marine Reserve, Aqua-Trek visits The Bistro, and Coral Coast Divers visits The Colosseum. Beqa Lagoon Resort operates its own island-based dives, including The Cathedral. A booking for “Beqa shark diving” should identify which of these experiences you are buying.

Which Beqa Lagoon shark-dive operator should you choose?

Beqa Adventure Divers: Shark Reef Marine Reserve

The Fiji Shark Dive includes two dives. Its standard published first-dive profile begins at 30 m. Open Water-certified divers should confirm what alternative profile or additional training the operator requires before booking. The second dive starts at 25 m or 15 m depending on conditions. Morning shark trips are listed for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The shop is at Fairway Place, Pacific Harbour.

Aqua-Trek: The Bistro

Ultimate Shark Encounter operates on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The observation area is around 18 m. Meet at the dive shop on the grounds of The Pearl South Pacific Resort. The product page lists an 8:00 am check-in and an 8:30 am boat departure.

Coral Coast Divers: The Colosseum

The Colosseum shark dive uses an observation wall at about 18–20 m. Its morning starts with a 7:30 am briefing, followed by a boat journey of around 35 minutes. The operator publishes a minimum of four guests unless a private dive or four places are booked. The shop is at 1 Atoll Place, Pacific Harbour.

Beqa Lagoon Resort: an island stay

The Cathedral and Apex Arena are available exclusively to guests staying at Beqa Lagoon Resort. The Cathedral is listed at 65 ft, about 20 m, with Monday, Wednesday and Thursday morning trips subject to availability. Apex Arena is listed at 54 ft, about 16.5 m. Arrange the island stay and diving together rather than arriving at Pacific Harbour expecting a walk-in Cathedral trip.

The following are prices published by the operators and reviewed on October 9, 2026. FJ$ means Fijian dollars; US$ means US dollars. The base price and daily charges are shown separately so you can compare the actual booking components.

Beqa Adventure Divers publishes two different prices: Its dated daily-rates page lists FJ$500, while its shop lists FJ$475 including VAT. Ask for an itemized quote covering the dive, tax, levy, fuel, gear and transfers before paying. The table uses the dated rate page.

Coral Coast Divers charges online bookings in USD and dive-center payments in FJD at its listed rates. Those two published prices are payment options, not a currency conversion calculated here. For all operators, arrange road transfers separately unless your booking explicitly includes them.

Certification, depth limits and safety

Beqa Adventure Divers, Aqua-Trek and Coral Coast Divers publish Open Water certification as an entry requirement. Aqua-Trek also requires divers to be at least 15, excludes junior certifications, and requires minors to dive with a certified parent or guardian. Beqa Adventure Divers says divers with fewer than 30 logged dives receive Divemaster supervision.

An operator’s entry requirement does not extend your depth qualification. PADI’s depth guidance puts Open Water Divers at a maximum of 18 m, or the maximum reached during training if shallower. Tell the operator your certification, logged dives and most recent dive. If its advertised profile goes deeper than your training, arrange an appropriate route or additional training before booking that profile.

These are uncaged encounters with large wild animals. A briefing and close supervision manage the activity, but do not remove its risks. Follow the assigned observation position, stay with the group and let the crew handle feeding. Never touch, chase or feed the sharks yourself, or leave your position to get a photograph.

Complete the operator’s medical screening before the trip. The current Diver Medical questionnaire identifies answers that require a physician’s evaluation. Arrange that evaluation before arrival if your answers trigger it. Carry dive insurance covering your planned activity, depth and emergency evacuation.

How to get there from Nadi, Denarau, the Coral Coast or Suva

From Nadi Airport or Denarau

Travel along Queens Road toward Sigatoka, Navua and Suva, with Pacific Harbour as your destination. Aqua-Trek gives about 2.5 hours from Nadi International Airport. Treat that as the drive to Pacific Harbour, with extra time for a Denarau pickup, stops and traffic.

For a 7:30–8:00 am check-in, staying in Pacific Harbour the night before makes the morning easier. A day trip from Nadi or Denarau needs a prearranged early pickup and a return transfer. Give the driver the exact dive shop, not simply “Beqa Island.”

From the Coral Coast

Use the same Queens Road route east toward Pacific Harbour. Travel time depends on where your resort sits along the coast. Book a direct pickup from your accommodation with the operator or a private driver, especially for the early morning briefing.

From Suva or Nausori Airport

From Suva city, head west along Queens Road. Tourism Fiji’s Coral Coast Divers listing gives about 50 minutes from Suva. Aqua-Trek gives 1.5 hours from Nausori Airport. These are different starting points, so allow the airport journey separately from a Suva hotel pickup.

By bus

Buses between Nadi and Suva along Queens Road serve Pacific Harbour. They are useful for reaching nearby accommodation before dive day. Match the service to your briefing time and arrange the final trip to the shop. FijiEco’s Nadi–Suva transport guide covers the wider route and bus planning.

If you are staying on Beqa Island

Arrange the resort’s mainland meeting point and boat transfer when booking. Beqa Lagoon Resort describes roughly three hours by road from Nadi to the boat launch, then a 45-minute crossing. It does not operate boat transfers at night. Share a late flight arrival with the resort before choosing the first island night.

Booking and what happens on the dive day

Send your travel dates and diving history first, then agree the site, equipment and return pickup. Mainland contact options are:

A two-tank trip includes a briefing, boat journey, two dives and a surface interval. Time underwater depends on the site, air supply and agreed dive profile. Bull sharks are a focus at several sites, alongside reef, nurse, lemon and silvertip sharks. Tiger sharks may appear, but a tiger sighting or all advertised species is not part of a guaranteed itinerary.

Guests observe feeding conducted by the crew. The guide controls positioning and the ascent. Discuss camera size, lights and equipment with the operator before packing. Beqa Adventure Divers requires dark full-body wetsuits and black gloves, and excludes bright or shiny gear.

Read the operator’s cancellation terms alongside the quote. For example, Coral Coast Divers’ policy provides a refund minus card fees seven or more days before the dive, a 50% refund minus card fees from 48 hours to seven days, and no refund within 48 hours. Operator cancellations have their own refund or rescheduling provisions.

What to bring

Your certification card, photo ID, logbook and Nitrox card if applicable.
Your dive computer and correctly fitting gear, or the equipment you have arranged to rent.
The full wetsuit and equipment colors required by your operator. Aqua-Trek requires a full wetsuit year-round.
A towel, dry clothes, drinking water, sun protection and a dry bag for the boat.
Your booking details, any required medical clearance, insurance contact and return transport details.

When to go

The first timing decision is the operator’s weekly shark-dive schedule. Allow more than one possible dive day if this is the main purpose of your trip, rather than making one morning between flights your only opportunity.

Aqua-Trek describes water temperatures around 24–27°C from May to October and 27–30°C from November to April. Exposure protection should suit the season and the operator’s rules. Wind, sea state and currents can change a trip, so judge the actual dive plan rather than choosing a month for a promised shark count or visibility.

Return transfers, flights and cruise calls

Arrange road pickup for early afternoon, with enough flexibility for the boat’s actual return. Coral Coast Divers lists a 12:30–1:00 pm dock return. Aqua-Trek’s product page and FAQ give times across 12:30–1:30 pm, so plan around the later time unless your crew arranges otherwise.

Keep a separate no-fly interval after diving. DAN recommends at least 18 hours before flying after multiple no-decompression dives in one day or over several days, for divers without decompression-sickness symptoms. Its single no-decompression dive recommendation is 12 hours. Longer intervals reduce risk, and dives requiring decompression stops call for an interval substantially longer than 18 hours.

A full non-diving day before your flight gives useful planning room. Follow any longer restriction from your dive computer or instructor. Tell the operator about onward flights and travel to altitude. If you develop symptoms that could indicate decompression sickness, seek medical advice and do not fly.

For a cruise call, share the ship’s all-aboard time and the port pickup location when requesting the dive. The boat return, road journey and boarding time all need to fit the call. For Beqa Island guests, the resort boat transfer also needs to fit the mainland airport transfer.

Food, non-divers and another dive day

After a mainland dive, Shark Bait Cafe at Coral Coast Divers offers breakfast and lunch at the shop. Staying around Pacific Harbour leaves time for a meal and an afternoon break before the next journey. Aqua-Trek’s meeting point at The Pearl is also useful when comparing accommodation near the dive center.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do a Beqa Lagoon shark dive as a day trip from Nadi?

Yes, with a mainland operator and an early road transfer arranged around its check-in time. Budget for the long return drive as well as the two dives. Staying in Pacific Harbour the previous night is more comfortable for an early briefing.

Can my non-diving partner join the shark-dive boat?

Do not include a boat seat for a non-diver in your plan automatically. Aqua-Trek’s FAQ says it cannot accommodate non-divers on its dive boat and that the sites are unsuitable for snorkeling. It points guests to separate Beqa Lagoon snorkeling trips through The Pearl’s tour desk. Beqa Lagoon Resort offers house-reef snorkeling for its staying guests.

Will I get a refund if I only do one of the two dives?

That depends on the operator’s booking terms. Coral Coast Divers charges for the full two-tank experience and does not refund or discount it for completing only one dive. Discuss the arrangements with your chosen operator if you intend to do a single dive.
