How to Get to Fiji from the USA
The simplest route from the US mainland to Fiji is usually a flight to Nadi International Airport (NAN) through Los Angeles or San Francisco. Fiji Airways operates the nonstop leg, which takes about 11 to 12 hours. Travelers starting in Hawaii can also fly nonstop from Honolulu on selected days, taking about 6 hours 50 minutes.
The important booking decision is how the flight connects with your first night in Fiji. Nadi is the main gateway, but reaching an island resort can require a road transfer, a boat or another flight. Plan those parts together so the arrival time works for the whole journey.
Dallas route update: Fiji Airways suspended its Nadi to Dallas/Fort Worth service effective 7 September 2026. Travelers from Dallas and other US cities can connect to Fiji through Los Angeles or San Francisco, including itineraries using Fiji Airways' partnership with American Airlines. If your original Dallas nonstop booking was affected by the suspension, check the revised itinerary provided by Fiji Airways before changing hotel or resort transfers.

Which US airports have nonstop flights to Fiji?
For upcoming trips, start with the three gateways below and the Dallas change noted above. These are outbound nonstop flight times to Nadi, not the total journey from your home airport. Operating days and scheduled durations depend on the date.
| Departure airport | Approximate flight time | Best starting point for |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles (LAX) | 11 to 12 hours | Southern California departures and convenient domestic connections from other US cities. |
| San Francisco (SFO) | 11 to 12 hours | Northern California departures or an itinerary with a better connection through SFO. |
| Honolulu (HNL) | About 6 hours 50 minutes nonstop | Travelers already in Hawaii or combining Hawaii and Fiji. Some other Honolulu itineraries include an intermediate stop. |
Starting in New York, Chicago, Dallas or another US city
Search from your home airport to NAN as one itinerary, then compare options through LAX and SFO. A shorter domestic flight does not necessarily create a shorter trip: the layover and onward departure matter just as much. Compare the total elapsed time, number of stops and arrival date together.
Fiji Airways, American Airlines and codeshares
Fiji Airways operates the nonstop flights in the table. A partner airline may sell the ticket under its own flight number. American Airlines can provide a US connecting leg, and Qantas markets codeshare services operated by Fiji Airways. The words “operated by” identify the airline supplying the aircraft and onboard service on each segment.
Routes through another country
Vancouver or Auckland can be useful alternatives when the fare or a planned stopover suits your trip. Include the extra travel time and transit documents in the comparison. A US passport holder connecting through Auckland may need an NZeTA even without leaving the airport; the New Zealand transit guidance is linked in the sources below.
How to compare flight prices and connections
Compare the cost of getting from home to your first Fiji stay. The airfare is only one part of that total.
- Price a through ticket first. This gives you a useful starting point before comparing separate US and international flights.
- Look at nearby travel dates. Use a fare calendar and price alerts in a flight search tool such as Google Flights. Compare the result with the airline's own fare.
- Compare equivalent fares. Include the bags and seats you need, change conditions and any airport hotel. Read whether an advertised price is one way or round trip and whether it is in US dollars.
- Add the Fiji transfer. An extra mainland hotel night or a different boat connection can change which flight is better value.
There is no reliable cheapest purchase day or fixed booking window for every Fiji trip. If your dates are flexible, use the Fiji weather and seasons guide alongside the fare calendar. That keeps the choice connected to the holiday you want, including beach time, outdoor activities and time on the islands.
When separate tickets create extra work
A self-transfer may require collecting bags, changing terminals and checking in again. If the first flight is delayed, the second airline may treat the missed flight as a no-show. One booking reference does not by itself prove that all flights are issued as a single through ticket.
For a separately booked US feeder flight, arriving at LAX or SFO the previous day is a more forgiving option when the budget allows. Compare that hotel's cost with the through ticket. There is no single connection buffer that covers every airport, ticket arrangement and delay.
What baggage is included on Fiji Airways?
The standard international Economy fare brands have the following checked-bag allowances. Your issued ticket sets the applicable allowance, especially when partner airlines are involved.
| Fare brand | Included checked baggage |
|---|---|
| Lite, where offered | No included checked bag. |
| Value | 1 piece up to 30 kg (66 lb). |
| Comfort | 2 pieces, each up to 30 kg (66 lb). |
| Plus | 2 pieces, each up to 30 kg (66 lb). |
Not every fare brand is sold on every route. Comfort and Plus are Economy fares, so compare their inclusions and flexibility with the cost of adding extras to Value.
For Economy cabin baggage, the main bag is limited to 7 kg (15 lb) and 55 × 40 × 23 cm, including handles and wheels. A small personal item is also allowed under the airline's conditions. A bag accepted on your US domestic flight may exceed the Fiji Airways limit, so weigh and measure it at home.
Connecting to a domestic Fiji Link flight
When Fiji Airways international and domestic sectors are issued on the same Fiji Airways ticket, the international baggage allowance applies. A separately ticketed domestic flight has its own allowance: domestic Value, for example, includes one checked piece up to 15 kg (33 lb). A 30 kg bag that fits your international allowance can therefore create an extra charge or require repacking on a separate domestic ticket.
Small aircraft also have space limits. Arrange surfboards and other oversized equipment with the operating airline before including that flight in the itinerary.
The date line and your first hotel night
On a typical overnight flight from Los Angeles, a Monday evening departure can reach Fiji on Wednesday morning. Crossing the International Date Line changes the calendar date; it does not mean you spent two full days on the aircraft. The return often lands in the USA on the same calendar date as departure from Fiji.
Use the local dates printed on your ticket for both directions. For a Wednesday arrival, book the Wednesday hotel night unless you have deliberately arranged earlier room access. A morning landing does not include early check-in. To guarantee a room immediately, the hotel may require the previous night to be booked and held for your morning arrival.
Entry requirements for US passport holders
US passport holders visiting Fiji for tourism for less than four months do not normally need a tourist visa. Admission and the permitted stay are determined at the border. The requirements depend on your passport, not simply on flying from the United States.
- Passport: valid for at least six months after your scheduled departure from Fiji, with one blank page for the entry stamp.
- Onward travel: a return or onward ticket for leaving Fiji.
- Funds: evidence that you can support yourself during the visit.
- Accommodation: the first property's address and booking details.
- Transit documents: any permission required by countries on the outbound or return route.
The Fiji visa and entry requirements guide explains the main visitor-permit and document questions for US, Australian and New Zealand passport holders. Longer stays and other travel purposes need the appropriate immigration category.
Arrival declarations and biosecurity
Declare food, including packaged snacks, and relevant plant or animal products. Used outdoor equipment may also need declaring. Clean soil from hiking shoes and camping gear before packing. Declaring an item allows an officer to assess it; it does not automatically make a restricted item admissible.
Getting from Nadi Airport to your destination
After landing, allow time for immigration, luggage collection and customs before the onward transfer. Keep your first accommodation address and transfer details available offline.
Nadi, Denarau and the Coral Coast
These mainland stays use road transfers. Arrange a hotel pickup, prebook a transfer or take a taxi appropriate for your group and luggage. Agree the full fare and any child-seat needs in advance. The Nadi airport-to-hotel transfer guide compares the practical options.
Mamanuca Islands
Many resorts use a road transfer to Port Denarau followed by a boat. Other properties have different departure points or arrangements, so start with the transfer attached to your chosen resort. Denarau is reached by road; an offshore resort requires the next leg as well. The Mamanuca transfer guide helps you compare scheduled boats and other options.
Yasawa Islands
The Yasawa Flyer timetable lists an 8:45 am departure from Port Denarau, with check-in 30 minutes before departure. That means reaching check-in by 8:15 am, after airport formalities and the road transfer.
A 6:00 am flight arrival is not a guaranteed connection. Send the flight details to the resort or boat operator before booking the transfer. If the timing does not work, spend the first night in Nadi or Denarau and take the boat the following morning. Your particular island determines the boat journey time and whether that service is suitable.
Suva, Savusavu and Taveuni
Nadi (NAN) and Suva/Nausori (SUV) are different airports. For the capital, compare a domestic flight with the overland journey in the guide to getting to Suva.
For Vanua Levu or Taveuni, choose the domestic airport that serves your actual accommodation. Savusavu uses SVU; Taveuni's Matei Airport uses TVU. The Savusavu transport guide explains the choice between Savusavu and Labasa. Price the domestic leg with the international ticket where possible, and include the hotel's final ground transfer.
Leave enough time for the journey home
Work backward from the international check-in deadline, including the boat or domestic flight and the drive to Nadi Airport. If a delayed island departure would leave no workable alternative, a final night on the mainland gives you more room to recover. Build that into your Fiji itinerary before choosing the resort dates.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fly nonstop from New York to Fiji?
No. Compare connecting itineraries to Nadi, commonly through Los Angeles or San Francisco. The total travel time includes the US flight and layover as well as the long-haul leg.
Do I need to fly through Australia?
No. The nonstop flights from LAX, SFO and Honolulu reach Fiji without an Australian connection. Australia can make sense as part of a combined trip, but it is not required to reach Fiji from the USA.
Is Fiji Airways Comfort a Premium Economy cabin?
No. Comfort is an Economy fare brand. Its baggage and fare conditions differ from other Economy brands; the name does not mean you are booking a separate Premium Economy cabin.
Can I enter Fiji with a one-way inbound ticket?
You still need an acceptable return or onward ticket showing that you will leave Fiji. It does not have to take you back to the USA, but the rest of your itinerary must meet the relevant entry and transit requirements.
