Good news: US citizens, Australians, and New Zealanders don't need a visa for Fiji. Entry is straightforward and visa-free stays are generous. However, there are specific requirements and documents you must have. This guide covers exactly what you need, what to expect at immigration, and common mistakes to avoid.

Documents Required for Entry
You won't need a visa, but you MUST have these documents when arriving in Fiji. Border agents will check each item. Entry can be denied if you don't meet these requirements.
✓ Valid Passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date from Fiji. A passport expiring in 5 months will be rejected.
✓ Return/Onward Ticket
Proof of exit from Fiji. This can be a return flight, onward flight, or cruise confirmation. Immigration verifies you're leaving. Digital copy is fine.
✓ Proof of Accommodation
Hotel booking, resort confirmation, or address of where you're staying. Shows you have accommodation arranged. Email confirmation works.
✓ Proof of Funds
Evidence you can support yourself during your stay. Bank statements, credit cards, or cash. You must demonstrate sufficient funds for the duration of your visit. Rarely checked but required.
✓ Completed Arrival Card
Given on the plane or at immigration. Fill it out with personal information, passport details, and Fiji address. Takes 2 minutes.
The Fiji Visitor Permit
When you arrive with valid documents, border officials stamp your passport with a Visitor Permit.
This is NOT a visa—it's an entry permit. Tourism only.
Permit Details:
- Maximum: Up to 4 months (120 days)
- Tourism purposes only
- Extensions possible (see below)
- Officer discretion on duration
Actual Stay Granted:
- Border officials decide duration
- May receive less than 4 months
- State your intended stay length
- Have clear travel plans ready
Important: Border officials decide how long you can stay.
While you can stay up to 4 months, they may grant less time. Explain your travel plans clearly and politely if you need a longer stay.
Officials can deny entry even to visa-exempt nationals who don't meet requirements or raise concerns.
Extending Your Stay Beyond Initial Permit
Need more time? Apply for an extension in Suva or Nadi.
The initial permit allows up to 4 months. Authorities can extend this by an additional 2 months (total 6 months) if approved.
How to Extend:
- Visit extension office in Suva or Nadi
- Complete extension form
- Pay FJD $95.10 fee (verify current rates)
- Processing takes 1-3 days
Requirements:
- Proof of sufficient funds
- Reason for extension
- Accommodation address
- Passport with current permit
Important: Extensions are NOT automatic.
Authorities grant extensions at their discretion. According to Fiji Immigration: "The stay can further be extended to 2 months if applying for extension and the fee is paid."
Approval depends on your circumstances and reasons. The extension fee (FJD $95.10 as of 2025) may change—always verify the official fee schedule at immigration.gov.fj before applying.
Step-by-Step Arrival at Nadi Airport
Step 1: Complete Arrival Card on Plane
Flight attendants distribute cards. Fill in passport number, nationality, Fiji address (hotel/resort name). Crew provides pens.
Step 2: Join the Queue
Line up with your passport, arrival card, and documents.
Lines typically move fast (10-15 min). Officials may ask where you're staying, how long, and why you're visiting.
Step 3: Document Review
The official reviews your passport validity, return ticket, and accommodation proof.
Be honest and polite. Keep documents ready (not buried in your bag).
Step 4: Receive Your Permit Stamp
The official stamps your passport with the Visitor Permit.
Duration varies. Ask "How many days?" if unclear. Keep this page safe.
Step 5: Customs & Baggage
Exit immigration, collect bags, go through customs (usually wave-through). Declare items if required. You're now in Fiji!
Common Mistakes That Get You Turned Away
❌ Passport Expiring Soon
Passport must be valid 6+ months beyond your departure. If it expires in 3 months, you'll be denied entry. Check before booking flights.
❌ No Return Ticket Proof
Immigration wants proof you're leaving. Open return flights, cruise confirmations, or onward flight works. Digital copy on your phone is fine.
❌ No Hotel Booking or Address
You need to provide an address in Fiji. Even Airbnb bookings work. "I'll find accommodation" is not acceptable.
❌ Incomplete Arrival Card
Messy or incomplete cards get questioned. Fill neatly and clearly. Some lines make you redo them. Take 5 minutes on the plane.
❌ Being Vague About Your Stay
Officials ask why you're visiting. "Just traveling" or "not sure" raises red flags.
Say: "Snorkeling, relaxing, visiting villages." Have a clear answer ready.
When You Leave: Departure Requirements
💵 Fiji Departure Tax
Most airlines include the departure tax in your ticket price.
Verify this with your airline before travel. If not included, you'll pay at the airport. Contact your carrier for current requirements.
🛂 Passport Check on Exit
Show your passport at the departure counter.
Staff verify you have a valid Visitor Permit. Ensure your passport has the entry stamp.
⏰ Arrive 3+ Hours Early
International flights from Nadi require 3-hour check-in. Airport can be slow. Don't be late.
Special Circumstances & Questions
Can I work in Fiji on a Visitor Permit?
No. Work permits require separate sponsorship. The Visitor Permit explicitly prohibits employment. Violation can result in deportation.
What if my passport was lost/stolen in Fiji?
Contact your embassy immediately (in Suva). They'll issue emergency travel documents. You'll still need valid ID to leave Fiji.
Can I re-enter Fiji after leaving?
Yes. You receive a new Visitor Permit on each entry.
However, authorities may question frequent short exits/re-entries. They watch for illegal working patterns.
Do I need travel insurance?
Not required by law, but highly recommended. Medical costs can be expensive. Some activities (diving, adventure sports) require it.
Do I need vaccinations to enter Fiji?
No official requirement as of 2025.
However, verify with CDC or your health ministry before traveling. Some vaccinations may be recommended but not mandatory for entry.
